How to Run a Giveaway During a Live Shopping Show

A practical guide to live show giveaways — keyword entries, fair winner selection, writing rules, legal basics like no purchase necessary, prize ideas and announcing winners.

A giveaway is one of the simplest ways to make a live shopping show more exciting. It gives people a reason to show up on time, stay until the end and type in the chat — and an active chat makes everyone else more likely to stay. But a giveaway done carelessly can feel unfair, annoy your audience or even create legal problems. This guide walks through how to run one well.

Why giveaways work in live shows

  • They boost attendance. Promoting "one viewer wins our new jacket" gives people a concrete reason to sign up for a reminder.
  • They keep people watching. If you draw the winner near the end, viewers stay through more of your products.
  • They get chat moving. A keyword entry gets dozens of people typing at once, which makes the show feel alive.
  • They create goodwill. A winner who's thrilled on camera is great for your brand.

The aim isn't to give away as much as possible. It's to create a fun moment that supports the products you're selling.

Choose the right prize

The best prize is something your target customers want, not something anyone wants. A generic gift card or gadget attracts people who'll never buy from you. A product from your own range attracts the right audience and shows it off.

  • A featured product from the show. The simplest option, and it doubles as a demo.
  • A bundle or set. Feels generous and introduces winners to several products.
  • A store credit. Lets the winner choose, and often leads to them spending more than the credit.
  • Early access or a new release. Great for brands with collectors or loyal fans.
  • A personal experience. A styling session or a custom piece can be memorable and cheap to provide.

Keep the value proportionate. For example, a store running small weekly shows might give away one mid-priced product per show rather than one big prize per month — frequent, smaller giveaways often keep people coming back more reliably.

How keyword giveaways work

A keyword giveaway is the most common live format. The host announces a word, viewers type it in the chat during an entry window, and a winner is picked at random from everyone who entered.

  1. Announce the prize early. Mention it at the start and explain when the draw will happen.
  2. Reveal the keyword. Choose something short and on-theme, like "SPARKLE" or "COZY." Say it clearly and show it on screen.
  3. Open the entry window. Give viewers a set time, such as two to five minutes. Count down the last 30 seconds.
  4. Draw at random. Use a tool that picks randomly from all valid entries. Never pick by hand from the chat.
  5. Announce the winner live. Say the name, congratulate them and explain how they'll be contacted.

LiveShoply includes keyword giveaways on every plan, including Free. You set the keyword and prize, viewers type it in chat, and a winner is drawn at random from everyone who entered.

Tip: run the giveaway in the second half of the show. Announce it in your welcome, run it after your strongest products, and remind viewers along the way that it's coming.

Keep it fair and transparent

Nothing kills goodwill faster than a giveaway people think is rigged. Fairness is about clear rules followed consistently.

  • One entry per person. Typing the keyword ten times shouldn't give anyone ten chances.
  • Exclude staff and family. Make it clear in your rules that employees, hosts and their households can't win.
  • Stick to the stated window. Don't extend the entry time because your favorite regular hasn't typed yet.
  • Draw on camera. Show the random draw happening live.
  • Have a backup plan. Decide in advance what happens if the winner doesn't respond — usually a redraw after a set number of days.

Also think about where the giveaway runs. If you stream to several platforms at once, decide whether entries from every chat count or only entries from your store's chat, and say so clearly. Counting only your store chat keeps the draw simple and brings viewers to where they can shop.

Write simple official rules

Even for small giveaways, written rules protect you and set expectations. Link to them from your show page or description. Typical rules cover:

  • Who is running the giveaway (your business name and contact details).
  • Who can enter: minimum age and eligible countries or states.
  • How to enter, including any free method of entry.
  • The entry period, with dates and time zone.
  • The prize, its approximate value, and that it can't be exchanged for cash (if that's the case).
  • How the winner is chosen and notified, and how long they have to claim.
  • How you'll use entrants' information.
  • That the giveaway isn't sponsored by or associated with any social platform you also stream to.
Rules don't need to be long. They need to be clear enough that a viewer could read them and know exactly how the giveaway works.

This section is general information, not legal advice. Giveaway laws vary by country and by state, so check with a qualified advisor before running promotions, especially large ones.

  • Avoid creating an illegal lottery. In the US, a promotion that combines a prize, chance and "consideration" (usually a required purchase or payment) can be treated as an illegal lottery. That's why most giveaways say "no purchase necessary" — and mean it.
  • Make free entry genuinely equal. If buying something gives an entry, a free method should give an equal chance. The simplest approach is to not tie entry to purchases at all.
  • Check high-value prize rules. Some states have registration or bonding requirements for prizes above certain values, and winners may have tax obligations for valuable prizes.
  • Respect age limits. Many brands limit entry to adults to avoid complications.
  • Follow platform rules. If you also stream to social platforms, they have their own promotion policies.
  • Be careful with skill contests. A "best comment wins" contest is judged on skill, which has different rules. Keep it simple with a random draw unless you've checked.

Announcing and contacting winners

The announcement is a big moment, so make it count.

  • Celebrate on camera. Say the winner's display name with enthusiasm. Viewers enjoy the moment even if they didn't win.
  • Explain next steps. "We'll message you to arrange shipping" tells everyone the giveaway is real.
  • Contact privately. Never ask winners to post addresses in the chat.
  • Warn about scams. Tell viewers you'll never ask for payment to claim a prize. Fake "winner" messages are common.
  • Follow up publicly. With permission, share the winner's photo with their prize next week — it's great promotion for the next show.
  • Promote the next giveaway. End by telling viewers what you'll give away next time.
