How to Turn Instagram Reels into Shoppable Videos on Shopify

Repurpose your Instagram Reels as shoppable videos on Shopify product pages — what can be imported, captions, the best placements and adding video to product media.

If you post Reels on Instagram, you already have a library of short product videos. Most of them get a burst of views in the first few days and then disappear from feeds. Putting those same videos on your Shopify store, with products attached, gives them a second life where shoppers are already close to buying.

This guide explains how to pick the right Reels, get them onto your store, and place them where they'll have the most effect.

Why repurpose Reels on your store

  • You've already made them. No extra filming — just reuse content that already works.
  • They're shot for mobile. Vertical 9:16 video fits perfectly on phone screens, where most of your store traffic comes from.
  • They answer questions. A 20-second Reel showing a product in use answers "what does it actually look like?" better than another photo.
  • They add social proof. Videos featuring real people, including creators and customers (with permission), make products feel tried and tested.

Choose which Reels to use

Not every Reel belongs on a product page. Instagram rewards trends and entertainment; a product page rewards clarity.

  • Focus on one product. Videos that clearly show a single product work best on that product's page.
  • Show it in use. Try-ons, demos, before-and-after application and unboxings all work well.
  • Make sure it still matches. Skip Reels showing old packaging, discontinued colors or expired offers.
  • Avoid trend-dependent jokes. A meme format that was funny in March may confuse someone shopping in October.
  • Check rights. If a Reel features a creator or customer, make sure you have permission to use it on your store.

Get your Reels onto Shopify

There are two common ways to move Reels to your store: importing them through Instagram's API using a connected app, or downloading the original video files and uploading them.

One important limitation: Reels that use licensed music from Instagram's audio library generally can't be imported through Instagram's API. The music is licensed for use on Instagram only, so those videos are typically unavailable to outside apps. If you rely on a trending track, the Reel will likely be skipped or fail to import.

Tip: keep the original files you edited before posting — ideally a version without music or with royalty-free music. Uploading those directly avoids the licensed music problem entirely and usually gives better quality than a re-downloaded copy.

With LiveShoply, you can upload short videos and attach products to them, then show them on product pages, your homepage or any section of your theme. Clips cut from your live show replays work the same way.

Add captions for silent viewing

Many shoppers browse with the sound off, especially on mobile. A video that relies on a voiceover loses most of its message without captions.

  • Burned-in text. If your Reel already has text overlays, check they're readable and still accurate.
  • Generated captions. On LiveShoply Growth and Pro, automatic captions are available in 12 languages, so videos make sense on mute.
  • Keep text clear of controls. Make sure captions don't sit under the add-to-cart button or product card.
  • Check accuracy. Product names, sizes and prices should be exactly right. Review generated captions before publishing.

Best places to show shoppable videos

Placement decides whether a video is seen and whether it helps someone buy.

  • Product pages. The most valuable spot. Put the video near the top, close to the photos and add-to-cart button. See our guide to shoppable videos on product pages.
  • Homepage. A row or carousel of short videos makes your store feel active and gives visitors an easy way to browse.
  • Collection pages. Videos showing several items from a collection help shoppers compare.
  • Landing pages. Campaign and launch pages benefit from video that matches the ads sending traffic to them.

Start with your top-selling product pages. That's where a small lift has the biggest effect on revenue.

Add videos to product media

Besides shoppable video widgets, you can add a video directly to a product's media in Shopify. This puts the video in your theme's main product gallery alongside your photos, and it can also appear when your products are shown in the Shop app.

  1. In Shopify admin, open Products and select the product.
  2. In the Media section, add the video file (MP4 or MOV).
  3. Drag it into position — second or third in the gallery tends to work well, after your main photo.
  4. Add alt text describing what the video shows.
  5. Preview the product page on mobile to check how the video plays in your theme.

Product media and shoppable video widgets work well together: the gallery video shows the product itself, while a shoppable video carousel can show styling ideas and related products.

Think of product media as "what is this?" and shoppable video as "how would I use it?"

A few practical details make a big difference to how videos perform on your store:

  • Trim the intro. Reels often open with a hook designed for scrolling feeds. On a product page, shoppers already chose the product, so start with the product itself within the first second or two.
  • Keep it short. For example, 15 to 45 seconds is usually enough to show a product in use. Longer videos are better suited to replays.
  • Pick a strong cover frame. The first frame or thumbnail is what shoppers see before pressing play. Choose a clear shot of the product, not a blurry transition.
  • Mind file size. Large video files can slow page loading. Export at a sensible resolution, such as 1080 by 1920, rather than uploading raw 4K footage.
  • Check autoplay behavior. Muted autoplay is usually the friendliest option. Videos that suddenly play sound can annoy shoppers and push them away.
  • Attach the right products. If a Reel shows an outfit, attach every item in it, not just the hero product. Shoppers who like the look can buy the whole thing.

It's also worth thinking about how Reels and live shows feed each other. A Reel teasing an upcoming show can drive reminder sign-ups on Instagram, and clips from the show can then become next week's Reels. Over time you build one library of video that works on both channels.

Keep your video library fresh

  • Review videos every few months and remove any showing outdated products or prices.
  • Add new Reels as you post them so your store stays as current as your Instagram.
  • Use clips from your live shows — they show real questions being answered. See how to do live shopping on Shopify to get started.
  • Compare product pages with and without video to see where it helps most.
